Used to live there and it’s great for a quick cheap meal, but the Chinese and Vietnamese at Cooleman offer better quality across the board. For dinner there are better places than the Duffy shops, sorry. There’s also AD’s takeaway just out of Cooleman Court for a reasonable breakfast. Weston Creek isn’t really a brunchy area so much as the traditional cafe strips around Canberra are. Sakeena’s does a great breakfast and their pies are fantastic. I also “hear” that Maestral is good – but I’ve never actually eaten there yet. * The Weston club’s a pretty comfortable place for a pub meal and a beer too – menu and preparation are a little average though (Perhaps try the Calamari or Weston Burger). * AD’s cafe – Interesting menu combination: asian noodle dishes and pub counter meals. * Laksa Hut – Solid Laksa joint (Try the Laksa! ? Great for late breakfasts on the weekends or getting a discount take-away near their closing time. * Sakeenas – A good home-made Greek-style cafe. * Masala hut – Good Southern-Indian style food. The Spinach + Fetta or Lamb, tomato and capsicum pides are also great. * Turkish takeaway (Used to be Turkish + Thai) – Good kebabs w/ house-made bread. I can recommend the standard Thai staples of Money Bags, Pad Thai and Green Chicken curry. * River Quai – Above-average Thai restaurant. They have a menu of pizza and pasta dishes for those who don’t want fish and these are safe for people with seafood allergies (They have first-hand experience). Very casual dine-in and take-away – can be irregular opening hours though. The best fish + chips I’ve had – Try the barramundi spring rolls, potato cakes, Japanese prawn cutlets. * Fish Tales on Brierly – Run by the Chattos formerly of Chats and Chatfish. Try dishes like the Prawns with onions and chilli (Shells on!) – messy, but great. * My’s Vietnamese – REALLY good Vietnamese food. BYO.Congratulations – you made an inspired choice! Weston has some remarkably good restaurants. Open for lunch, Wednesday to Friday, noon-2pm and dinner, Tuesday to Saturday, from 5pm. Maestral, 13 Trenerry Street, Weston, call 6287 3930. He sums up the food experience at Maestral perfectly: “It’s like I’m dining at home.” One friend who introduced us is from Vienna. The decor is straightforward and several awards of excellence from the Restaurant and Catering Association, stretching back as far as 2003, hang on one wall. Desserts (all reasonably priced at around $10) include a traditional apple strudel.

Every other dish ordered was a winner – we simply could do no wrong. The grilled Moreton Bay bugs with rice and a chilli creamy sauce ($32) from the specials board were out of this world with the chilli making its presence known. You must try pola/pola, a mixture of Cevapcici (small sausages formed from spiced ground meat) and raznici (skewered pork meat). On the meatier side are classics such as Pljeskavica (veal and pork mince patty stuffed with feta cheese), Stubica (pan-fried pork fillet stuffed with prunes and served with a plum brandy cream sauce) and Barun Trenk (veal schnitzel stuffed with mild salami, sweet capsicum paste and boiled egg). Maestral also offers three intriguing seafood platters, including an Adriatic platter for one ($31.50) and for two ($62) as well as a Maestral platter for two ($90). Jewels from the sea included scampi, jumbo prawn and lobster dishes. Starters begin at around $13 and move up to around $20 and the restaurant is happy to convert any to a main. We shared the fried baby calamari with fresh garlic aioli from the main menu and sensational fried school prawns with lime from the large specials board. The bouillabaisse ($18) is the best I have ever tasted and the goulash soup ($14.50) not far behind. Luckily, we were able to sit back and be guided by our friends. We were introduced to the restaurant by big fans – very big fans – who have been dining at Maestral forever and a day.Įvery item on the menu cries out “order me”, making it very difficult to choose what to eat. The team in the kitchen cook up a storm, including dishes celebrating the food influences of neighbouring countries such as Austria, Hungary, Italy and the Middle East. Maestral is a small, unpretentious, friendly place on Trenerry Street, near Cooleman Court, in Weston. IT has been drawing crowds for more than a decade with award-winning dishes inspired by the rich cooking traditions of Croatia and the country’s adoration of fresh seafood.
